8 injured, 1 person missing after explosion at paint plant in Columbus, Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Eight people were injured and one person was missing Thursday after an explosion started a fire at a paint factory.

The two-alarm fire started around midnight at Majestic Paints on the city’s Near East Side and involved at least one explosion.

Fire officials said many employees were able to evacuate on their own, however, two had to be rescued by fire crews. In total, seven people were taken to area hospitals. All of them are now considered stable.

Battalion Chief Steve Martin said one employee remains unaccounted for and fire crews are “doing everything we can” to find that person.

Around 40 employees were believed to be in the building at the time the fire started.

Because a portion of the building was damaged in an explosion that started the fire, the search and rescue process is taking longer, Martin said.

There were additional explosions as the fire burned, Martin said, including at least one at another building on the Majestic Paints campus that is within 100 feet of the primary building that was on fire.

Hazmat crews and a crew from the Ohio EPA are on scene.
