Megan Rapinoe remains arguably the biggest name in women’s football, and she has jumped to support the 15 Spanish national team players who have pulled away from the side after Luis Rubiales rejected their attempts to have coach Jorge Vilda dismissed.

A huge story emerged on Thursday night that said as many as 15 players had written to the Royal Spanish Football Federation – the RFEF – to request Vilda‘s sacking as his tenure is affecting their emotional state and health.

The RFEF, though, hit back at the players and turned down their demands, saying they are “not going to allow the players to question the continuity of the national coach”.

“These types of manoeuvres are far from exemplary and outside the values of football and sport,” the RFEF said. “Making those decisions does not fall within their powers.”
