Liverpool hopeful Andy Robertson has not suffered a serious injury as they await scan results on his ankle after the defender limped off in Scotland friendly defeat

Liverpool and Scotland are hopeful Andy Robertson has avoided a serious injury after he limped off during the defeat to Northern Ireland on Tuesday, though both parties are still sweating on a full prognosis from the left back’s scan on Wednesday.

The ankle injury still makes him a doubt for Liverpool’s next matches but there is a hope he has avoided any season-ending damage.

Robertson looked in discomfort during the loss to Northern Ireland, where Liverpool team-mate Conor Bradley scored the only goal of the game.

The Scottish captain returned to Merseyside to have a scan on his ankle and Liverpool are confident he has avoided another serious injury, though more will become clear on the prognosis – and how many matches could miss – with further investigations in the coming days.

The Reds have had several boosts this international break as the likes of Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch stepped up their recovery from injuries while not playing for their nations, and Mo Salah also remained at base to get back to full sharpness ahead of the Premier League title run-in.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is also in line to return to action in the next fortnight, while forward Diogo Jota is not far behind in his recovery.

The Reds play two home games in a row starting with the visit of Brighton on Sunday, followed by another clash at Anfield against Sheffield United on Thursday, before a trip to Old Trafford on Sunday week.
