Chelsea 'are preparing to sell Reece James and Conor Gallagher this summer' as they look to ensure they don't breach the Premier League's FFP rules

Chelsea are reportedly prepared to sell captain Reece James and midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer as they look to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

As reported by The Times, Chelsea are in danger of following Everton and Nottingham Forest in breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) following their significant spending since the takeover led by Clearlake Capital in 2022.

If Chelsea sell homegrown pair James and Gallagher before the end of June then the entirety of their transfer fees will be able to be treated as player trading profit in their 2023-24 accounts.

James has made over 100 appearances for Chelsea and won the Champions League with the Blues in 2021. However, he has endured problems with injury and has been made just eight Premier League appearances so far this season.

Chelsea, overseen by co-owner Todd Boehly, are looking for a fee of around £80million for James, who has 16 caps for England.

Fellow England international Gallagher, meanwhile, has been tracked by clubs including Tottenham and West Ham. With his contract set to expire in 2025, Chelsea will be eager to either tie Gallagher, who wants significantly improved terms, to a new deal, or instead sell him this summer.

Chelsea have spent heavily in recent years, which has included signing Enzo Fernandez for £106million and Moises Caicedo for £100million.

However, the Blues have again struggled for consistency this season and are currently in 11th place in the Premier League.
