Gio Reyna insists family feud with USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter is 'not even an issue anymore' after he produced game-changing performance with two assists in win over Jamaica

Gio Reyna has insisted his family feud with USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter ‘is not even an issue anymore’ after he lit up their 3-1 win over Jamaica on Thursday night.

The Nottingham Forest loanee was at the center of a row between Berhalter and his parents in the aftermath of the 2022 World Cup.

Reyna, the son of former U.S. captain Claudio Reyna and midfielder Danielle Egan, was limited to a pair of substitute appearances during the tournament in Qatar.

Reyna’s parents proceeded to contact the U.S. Soccer Federation about a three-decades-old domestic violence allegation involving Berhalter and the woman who later became his wife.

Berhalter was replaced by a pair of interim coaches and, after a law firm retained by the USSF determined he did not improperly withhold information when he was hired in 2018, was rehired in June to resume coaching in September.

Reyna returned to the USMNT squad in October 2023 and looks likely to be a part of the squad for this summer’s Copa America.

The 21-year-old joined Nottingham Forest on loan in January after struggling for regular game time with Borussia Dortmund.

He came off the bench to help turn things around against Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals on Thursday, assisting both of Haji Wright’s goals in extra time.

Speaking about his relationship with Berhalter after the game, the Dortmund player said: ‘Obviously what happened, happened, but I think both of us are so far past it and just so focused on the group that, yeah, it’s not even an issue at all anymore. We’re just so far past it.’

The USMNT escaped defeat in Texas with an own goal in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time before Wright scored twice in extra time.

Greg Leigh scored 30 seconds in for the 57th-ranked Reggae Boyz, and the No. 13 Americans were on the verge of losing their third straight match.

Instead, Wright scored in the sixth and 19th minutes of extra time and the U.S. will try to win the Nations League for the third straight time on Sunday.

Both of Wright’s goals were set up by Reyna, who entered at the start of the second half after being limited to 42 minutes over four substitute appearances for Forest so far.

‘When we scored in the last minute, I knew we had the depth in the legs and the energy for the last 30 minutes to get a few more goals,’ Reyna said.
