Justin Thornton, an MMA fighter, has passed away. He was 38 years old at the time. The experienced boxer died more than a month after being knocked out by Dillon Cleckler on Aug. 20 in Mississippi at a Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship bout.
On Monday, BKFC President Dave Feldman announced Thornton’s death.

What Exactly happened during the bout with Dillon Cleckler?
At this point, it is unknown what caused his health to deteriorate. The reason of his death has yet to be determined. Despite his injuries, his companion Amber Willard stated he was in high spirits at the time, awake and joking.
Thornton was taken to the hospital with significant injuries after being knocked out on the bout. Thornton was paralyzed, needed assistance breathing, and had an infection in his lungs and spinal cord, according to a post on his Facebook page on September 23rd.

Dillon Cleckler knocked out Thornton in the first round at BKFC 20 in Biloxi, Mississippi on Aug. 20. Following a particularly powerful right by Cleckler, he struck the mat face-first 19 seconds after the bell rang.
Thornton was “half paralyzed after the fight,” according to Damon Martin of MMA Fighting. He was also admitted to the hospital for many weeks after contracting an infection as a result of a spinal cord injury.
Thornton’s cause of death has not been revealed. But it is presumed that the fighter passed away due to the infection in the spinal cord injusy.
