Michelle Dockery is best known as Lady Mary Crawley in the ITV hit period drama series Downton Abbey but as she ties the knot in real life, she opened up on the off-screen dramas she’s battled too.
The actress has previously been nominated for a Golden Globe Award and three consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress.
Fans of the ITV drama know that Michelle’s character Lady Mary is a well-to-do aristocrat with an upper-class English accent – but in real life the star has admitted that she is the complete opposite.
Michelle grew up in Romford with her mum Lorraine, dad Michael and two older sisters, Louise and Joanne and has a thick Essex accent from her childhood in the county.

Speaking about her Essex roots to Hello! magazine in 2013 she said she’s “not actually posh”, but had a strong accent when she was younger.
She claims that her accent cost her a role for The Sound of Music in the West End when she blew the casting directors away with her singing voice, but then responded in a thick accent when they asked her a question.

Is Michelle Dockery married?
Michelle tied the knot to Jasper Waller-Bridge, the brother of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, surrounded by her Downton Abbey co-stars.
Michelle and Jasper met through mutual friends back in 2019 and they made their first appearance together at the Rome Film Festival. The couple announced their engagement in January last year.
The actress’ big day comes seven years after the death of her late fiancé. Michelle was previously engaged to John Dineen. John tragically died aged 34 back in 2015 after battling a rare form of cancer.
