Elon Musk, responding to a poll he initiated on his X platform, has restored the account of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Jones and his Infowars site had been banned since 2018. Restoring Jones’ account comes as Musk has seen advertising from major brands flee the platform.

Jones repeatedly said on his web show that the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut never happened and was staged in an effort to tighten gun laws.

Relatives of many of the victims sued Jones in Connecticut and Texas, winning more than a billion in judgments against him, a verdict Jones is appealing. A Texas judge ruled in October that Jones cannot use bankruptcy protection to avoid paying more than $1.1 billion to families who sued.

Musk’s poll on Saturday asked if Jones should be reinstated, with the results showing 70% of those who responded in favor. Early today, Musk tweeted, “The people have spoken and so it shall be.”

A few hours later, Jones’ posts were visible again.

Musk said the move was about protecting free speech rights. He promised that X’s crowd-sourced fact-checking service “will respond rapidly to any AJ post that needs correction.”
