Netflix unwrapped the first footage for Jerry Seinfeld‘s comedy movie Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story, in addition to release dates and first-look images for a number of titles in its 2024 film slate, at a media event Wednesday night.
During the Next on Netflix presentation held at the streaming service’s headquarters in Los Angeles, attendees were treated to previously unseen looks at a number of forthcoming film and TV projects. Chief content officer Bela Bajaria was among the executives highlighting notable releases.
This included footage for Seinfeld’s feature directorial debut Unfrosted, which Netflix announced will debut May 3. Starring Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy and Jim Gaffigan, the movie focuses on cereal rivals Kellogg’s and Post battling to change the breakfast game in the 1960s. Other news included the announcement that director Julian Farino’s spy film The Union, which stars Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, will launch Aug. 16. A first-look image can be seen below from the movie, which features Wahlberg’s construction worker drawn into a dangerous world of espionage by his high school ex-girlfriend (Berry).
The announcement of The Union’s premiere date follows last week’s news that Netflix will not release the Berry-led sci-fi feature The Mothership from director Matthew Charman, despite most of the filming having already been completed on the movie. (It was in need of reshoots Netflix opted not to go forward with.)
Bajaria said at the event it was shelved as it had “lots of production issues and story issues.” She also added, “Everybody on both sides, the talent and us, all agreed that it was better to not launch it.”
News also broke last week that Scott Stuber is stepping down from Netflix’s top film job in March to launch his own media company. Bajaria will serve in the role on an interim basis until a replacement is found for Stuber, who encouraged Netflix to develop blockbuster-level fare.
Bajaria complimented Stuber, who was at the event, and said she was looking for qualities he had in the next film chief, someone with “experience and great relationships with filmmakers and somebody who’s really excited about what we’re doing at Netflix.”
Additionally, Netflix revealed at this week’s event that the previously unannounced animated film Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp from director Jon Rosenbaum will debut April 12. Also, Netflix shared that its animated feature The Casagrandes Movie — based on the Nickelodeon series The Casagrandes, which signed off in 2022 after three seasons — will begin streaming March 22.
Netflix unveiled new images for such films as director Janeen Damian’s fantasy-comedy Irish Wish (available for streaming March 15), starring Lindsay Lohan; Zack Snyder’s action flick Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver (April 19); and Mark Waters’ romantic comedy Mother of the Bride (May 9), starring Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove.
New images were also revealed for the following films that do not yet have release dates: Brad Peyton’s thriller Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez; Seth Gordon’s action-comedy Back in Action, led by Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz; and Jaume Collet-Serra’s thriller Carry-On, which features Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman.
During a Los Angeles comedy show in November, Seinfeld discussed his longtime fascination with Pop-Tarts. He said of filming the movie, “I loved doing it because I love the Pop-Tart. When I was a kid and the Pop-Tart came out, the back of my head blew right off.”
