Pickett’s penalty
The match review findings are in from Wednesday night’s game.
Richmond’s Marlion Pickett has avoided suspension for his gut punch on Clayton Oliver, but he will have to put his hand into his hip pocket. He can accept a fine of $3750 with an early plea or run the gauntlet for a sanction of $6250.
If I were advising him, I’d tell him to take the early plea.
Half-time state of play
Essendon 7.6 (48) lead Collingwood 6.11 (47)
Half-time
We have ourselves a game befitting the occasion.
The Pies clawed their way back into that contest then made it count on the scoreboard with five goals on the bounce before the Dons steadied just before the break to regain the lead.
After being in front by as much as 27 points in time-on in the first quarter, the Dons’ lead at the long change is just the one point.
I tipped the Pies before the game, and I’m happy to stick with them.
Kelly’s 100-metre penalty
Jake Kelly’s given away a 100-metre penalty – but Billy Frampton does not make them pay, missing from 40 metres out.
Kelly is the son of Collingwood chief Craig Kelly, who I suspect would have had mixed emotions about that passage of play.
Pies run comes to an end
After a run of five goals for the Pies, the Dons finally stop the rot through ruckman Sam Draper, who snapped like a goal sneak from 25 metres out. Didn’t the Dons need that!
Scores are level once again. 46-46.
Davey’s Rachele moment
Oooh, Alwyn Davey would like to have his time again. That was a Josh Rachele moment.
Davey could have gone back with a bit more vigour, but he went up with one arm. Kyle Langford was then pinged holding the ball, paving the way for Nick Daicos to pounce and run into an open goal from 45 out. Players of his quality do not miss them.
The Pies are in front!
Pies draw level
Hasn’t this game changed complexion?
The Pies have kept at it and at it, and are now playing the better footy.
The Dons are struggling to get the ball out of their defensive 50. The inside-50 count this quarter is 10-5 to Collingwood.
That goal from Brody Mihocek has levelled the scores at 40-40 – or deuce as they say in tennis.
