Rafa Nadal has announced that he will not play the Australian Open after the injury suffered on Friday in Brisbane in the quarter-final match against Jordan Thompson.

“Hi all, during my last match in Brisbane I had a small problem on a muscle that as you know made me worried. Once I got to Melbourne I have had the chance to make an MRI and I have micro tear on a muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury and that’s good news,” Nadal said.

“Right now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in 5 sets matches. I’m flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get some treatment and rest. I have worked very hard during the year for this comeback and as I always mentioned my goal is to be at my best level in 3 months.

“Within the sad news for me for not being able to play in front of the amazing Melbourne crowds, this is not very bad news and we all remain positive with the evolution for the season.

I really wanted to play here in Australia and I have had the chance to play a few matches that made me very happy and positive. Thanks all for the support and see you soon! Rafa.”

Focusing on the clay

Nadal, who has seen his comeback truncated after three good matches in Brisbane, has his hopes pinned on reaching full fitness on the European clay tour, on a less aggressive surface than the hard.

That is where the most special tournaments of his career have been and where he has had the most success, such as Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Mutua Madrid Open, Rome and Roland Garros.

Two months later, the same facilities of the French Open will host the tennis event of the Paris Olympic Games (July 27 to August 4). Nadal is guaranteed to be there because he will enter with a protected ranking (9).

March 3 in Las Vegas

Nadal is going to play on March 3 in an exhibition in Las Vegas against Carlos Alcaraz that will be broadcast on Netflix.

The big one on clay (May 26 to June 9) is the one marked in capital letters on the roadmap of the tennis player, 14 times champion of the French Internationals.
