Gary Neville dismisses three big name managers linked with the Manchester United job and says he'd rather KEEP Erik ten Hag then hand the reins over to 'someone who isn't a good fit' for the club

Gary Neville has shut down three potential managers linked with the Manchester United job should Erik ten Hag get sacked from the role.

United’s new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe will reportedly assess his options if the Red Devils fail to secure a place in the Champions League.

England manager Gareth Southgate has been linked with the job, while Graham Potter and Gary O’Neil have also been mentioned.

Speaking on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Betabout United’s options, Neville said: ‘As well as Gareth [Southgate] has done with England, I’ve never seen that as a fit with Man Utd.

‘I don’t see Graham Potter as a fit and that’s been a strong rumour too. I don’t see the fit between Gary O’Neil and United.

‘Instinctively as a fan, you hear a name and you feel it or you don’t feel it. It’s not a feeling I’ve had. I’ve not woke up and thought they look like a Man United manager.’

Neville went on to state he would rather Ten Hag stayed in control of the Manchester United than handing the reins over to Potter, O’Neil or Southgate.

Neville said: ‘I would like to see him stay in the sense that I’m not quite sure at the moment who else is out there

‘If Jurgen Klopp  was on the market or you could get a world-class manager in, it might be a different story.

‘But when you look at the options, we could end up with someone who isn’t as good as Erik ten Hag and hasn’t got his pedigree.

‘Ten Hag also has two years’ of experience at Old Trafford now. The fact he’s had that good first season and then a difficult one means he should be better for it.

‘So for me I don’t like the idea of him leaving and United bringing in the kind of names that have been suggested. That doesn’t feel right.

‘I would rather stick with Erik ten Hag and believe in him. If he has another season like this he obviously won’t still be there but we could still win the FA Cup and we could sneak into the Champions League.’

Southgate had emerged as Ratcliffe’s preferred choice as United manager, but the 53-year-old said he will not talk to any clubs while he is in charge of the Three Lions.

Other potential options include former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter, current Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi and Brentford’s Thomas Frank.

Manchester United are currently sitting sixth in the Premier League standings

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is being considered by United, as is ex-Wolves coach Julen Lopetegui.

Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane, Sporting manager Ruben Amorim and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann complete the shortlist.

An ambitious move for Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou also hasn’t been ruled out of the running either.

So, as it stands, United have a shortlist of about 10 managers they are looking at as potential replacements for Ten Hag.
