Who was Carl Whalley ?

Carl Whalley, in his 50s, was killed when his home in Chorley, Lancashire, collapsed after the explosion on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to reports of a house fire on Kirkby Avenue in the town of Clayton-le-Woods, around 1:20 p.m.

On a JustGiving page to raise money for his funeral expenses, Whalley’s family said they are “devastated” by his death and it could be “weeks or months” before they find out what caused the explosion.wikipedia

They said: ‘We appreciate all the kindness and support that the local community has offered us, it really means a lot during these difficult times.

‘We would also like to thank the local emergency services for their support.

“We don’t know the cause of the explosion and it will take weeks or months for us to find out what really happened.

“As a family we are devastated, Carl was such a loving, funny and lovable figure.

‘He would do anything for anyone and he didn’t deserve this.

We are not allowed to go back to our house and, as you have probably seen, there is nothing to go back to.

“We would appreciate a donation, no matter how large or small, it would go a long way toward the costs of the funeral.”

Incident Detail

Lancashire Police confirmed that one person was killed in the incident.

A spokesman for the force said: “His closest relatives have been informed and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.”

Tony Crook, area manager for the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS), said the property collapsed around the time firefighters arrived on the scene. Nearby residents were evacuated.

He said: ‘The fire was severe and spread next door. Now we have put out the fire.

Crook added that specialized urban search and rescue teams were deployed and dogs were deployed to search for victims in the rubble of the house.

Cause of Death

The cause of the explosion was initially believed to be gas, but a joint investigation between the police and the fire service is in its early stages and ongoing.

A cordon remains in place around the property and partners with local authorities are assisting with the well-being of people evacuated from neighboring properties, the force said.

People living in nearby properties had been advised to close windows and doors to avoid being affected by smoke.

A police spokesperson previously said: ‘Our officers are on the scene, along with our colleagues from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the ambulance service.

“A security cordon has been installed and nearby residents have been evacuated.”

There are also road closures and people are told to avoid the area, police said.

A spokesman for the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said several appliances were at the scene this afternoon.

Neighbor Barry Kemp told The Sun: ‘There was a massive explosion and the house burst into flames. In 30 minutes, the house was reduced to ashes.

There was none of that left. It sounded like a bomb exploding. I’ve never seen a house collapse so fast. ‘

Witnesses said the house caught fire immediately after the explosion.

Investigation

An LFRS spokesperson previously said: ‘Six fire trucks and an aerial ladder platform are present in an explosion involving a home on Kirkby Avenue in Clayton-le-Woods.

‘Please close windows and doors if you are nearby to avoid being affected by smoke. Colleagues from the Lancashire Police and North West Ambulance Service will also attend.

‘Several neighboring properties have been evacuated and a security cordon has been established. There are also road closures and people are advised to avoid the area. ‘

The Northwest Ambulance Service (NWAS) tweeted that the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) had arrived.

NWAS said: ‘We are supporting the ongoing incident. Our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) is currently on site, along with a MERIT medic, an ambulance and an operational commander. ‘
