In Riverside County, California, a hiker in distress on the Pacific Crest Trail was saved thanks to an emergency text sent to 911. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit was instrumental in the rescue, and the dramatic operation was recorded on video.
The department shared on social media that Rescue 9 responded to a call for help in the Whitewater area of the trail, south of San Bernardino County. The hiker managed to send an emergency 911 text using a Garmin device, prompting the rescue mission.
Tense video shared by RCSO shows the woman clinging to the side of the cliff. Her legs and arms were shaking as she death-gripped the rocks.
RCSO said the woman was exhausted from clinging to the side of the cliff for over an hour with a heavy pack and unsure footing.
A video of the rescue operation depicts the collaborative effort of the team. A rescue specialist was lowered to the hiker’s location and embraced by the woman in need of help. Subsequently, the team hoisted them up a cliff to ensure the hiker was in a safe position for aerial evacuation.
RCSO described it as an “intense, technical rescue.”
Officials did not release further details about the woman’s identity or condition. The video shows scrapes down her leg where she was clinging to the cliff, but she appeared alert and in good spirits after being rescued.
