In recent times, Harvard University in Massachusetts has found itself at the center of various controversies. One such incident involves President Donald Trump’s announcement to withhold more than $2.2 billion in funding from the university. This decision came after Harvard refused to adhere to the administration’s stipulations concerning antisemitism.
Read on for a list of the university’s recent controversies.
The current President of Harvard University, Alan Garber, assumed office in January 2024. On April 14, he issued a statement asserting the university’s stance of non-compliance with the Trump administration’s directives on antisemitism.
In his official communication, Garber highlighted the federal government’s actions threatening collaborative agreements with multiple higher education institutions, Harvard included, due to allegations of antisemitism within their academic environments.
He also noted that the Trump administration issued an updated and expanded list of demands, saying if the school plans to maintain a financial relationship with the federal government, it must comply.
“It makes clear that the intention is not to work with us to address antisemitism in a cooperative and constructive manner,” Garber wrote. “We have informed the administration through our legal counsel that we will not accept their proposed agreement.”
Following the letter, Trump doubled down on his attacks against the university, calling the institution a “joke.”
