Tyra Banks Tells Jenna Bush Hager Why She Wasn’t “In The Clique” Of Popular ‘90s Supermodels

During an appearance on the show Today With Jenna & Friends, Tyra Banks mentioned that despite being a prominent supermodel of her time, she wasn’t particularly close to her fellow models.

Having been a supermodel and later transitioning into a talk show host, Tyra Banks shared insights about her successful career in the fashion industry and on television. Following her retirement to focus on her family, she reflected on her experiences with Jenna Bush Hager on Today.

Bush Hager asked if Banks is still “buddies” with the other supermodels who gained popularity in the ’90s, such as Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista.

Responding to Bush Hager’s question, Banks admitted, “I never was!” She expressed how she used to admire her colleagues like Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington from a distance, being younger and looking up to them during her modeling days.

As for Moss, Banks said she felt starstruck one of the recent times they ran into each other backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

“Kate Moss and me, we were the same generation but I didn’t really have a friend group and she did. I was kind of by myself,” Banks explained.

“It was like the biggest smile that she gave me across the room and my little unpopular girl in the cafeteria self was like, ‘Kate Moss is saying hi to me!’” she recalled.

Banks explained that she felt like Moss “was cool back then and I wasn’t,” adding, “I was a supermodel but not in the clique.”

Banks also looked back on her time hosting The Tyra Banks Show. She also served as an executive producer on The CW show, which ran for five seasons.

She said that she felt “unhappy” at the peak of her career when she was juggling her talk show, America’s Next Top Model, and modeling.

“Jenna, I was miserable,” she admitted. “I felt like when I was walking to my talk show set that I had a meat hook in my back and it was saying, ‘Just stop, stop,’ and I was pulling against it because it was just too much.”

But it looks like Banks doesn’t mind being back in the spotlight too much. She told Bush Hager, “But I’m here with you and I’m like this feels good.”
