Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera had to walk out of the locker room after trying to deliver a postgame speech following the team’s improbable victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.

Rivera, 60, lost his mother earlier this month, who according to a Commanders statement, “passed away peacefully” with her family members by her side.

After the win, Rivera attempted to speak with his players, but was unable to speak as he fought back tears.

The only thing Rivera was able to say before walking away was, “My mother would have been proud.”

Rivera’s players rallied around him, cheering him on as he walked away, and addressing what the win means to their coach in a final huddle.

Commanders partying hard after beating Eagles

Despite Rivera’s tears, the Washington party continued in the locker room, with the noise bleeding through the walls and into the press room.

As Rivera spoke to the press about backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke, his players could be heard enjoying themselves.

Regarding Heinicke, Rivera says it’s been a rollercoaster, but that his backup QB gives the Commanders a great shot at winning.

With the win, Rivera has now defeated two unbeaten teams in the past few seasons, the first time coming against the 11-0 Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020.
