Medina County deputies: I-71 chase ends in Strongsville with suspect’s self-inflicted death

Deputies say the suspect, 31-year-old Chris Nerantzoulis, was apparently being investigated for two armed robberies in Marion County.

MEDINA, Ohio — Medina County Sheriff’s deputies say a suspect took his own life after leading a pursuit on I-71 that ended in Strongsville.

According to authorities, a vehicle driven by Chris Nerantzoulis, 31, was traveling north on I-71 around 12:50 a.m. when law enforcement in Harrisville Township observed a violation regarding the car’s equipment.

After attempting to pull over the driver for the observed violation, the deputy’s efforts were met with resistance as the driver did not stop, leading to a chase. The pursuit proceeded north on I-71 into Cuyahoga County, where the Strongsville Police Department intervened by using tire-deflating tools to stop the vehicle, as reported by the Medina County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies narrate that Nerantzoulis parked his car on the roadside and then ran away on foot. Subsequently, he discharged several rounds before ultimately taking his own life with a gunshot. Officials confirm that officers present at the scene did not fire their weapons.

Nerantzoulis was apparently being investigated for two armed robberies in Marion County. The most recent had occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

The Strongsville Police Department and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner are investigating Nerantzoulis’ self-inflicted gunshot wound.
