During the current federal election campaign, both Labor and the Coalition have been busy rolling out various policies aiming to win over voters. In contrast to the last election in 2022, where there were few notable differences between the major parties’ platforms, this time presents more discernible distinctions.
Here are the main election promises made by Labor and the Coalition in the lead-up to the 2025 election.
While Labor chose not to directly engage with the Coalition’s crime-related announcements, highlighting its achievements from the previous term such as the implementation of a child sexual offender registry and efforts to combat illegal tobacco imports, the Coalition made a commitment to invest $750 million in several crime-related initiatives.
This funding pledge includes the establishment of a new scheme for disclosing information about child sex offenders, the formation of a specialized AFP task force to tackle drug trafficking, and the creation of a national antisemitism taskforce spearheaded by the AFP.
It also said it would standardise knife laws and roll out detector wands across the country in conjunction with the states and territories.
