Two individuals believed to have stolen a car resorted to a drastic measure to escape the authorities, resulting in a tragic outcome, according to reports originating from Missouri. A body camera captured the incident in which Dekayo Demetrius Patterson, aged 21, managed to survive the fall. However, emergency responders had to rescue him from the edge of the Blanchette Bridge located in St. Charles County.
The dramatic scene unfolded as the suspects opted to jump off the bridge while attempting to flee the law enforcement officers. Despite managing to survive the fall, the situation was dire for Patterson as he required assistance to be safely retrieved from the railing of the Blanchette Bridge in St. Charles County, as recorded by a body camera.
The other man did not make it. From Missouri State Highway Patrol about the 23-year-old found dead in the Missouri River on Sept. 10:
VICTIM 1 WAS FOUND TO BE FLOATING IN THE MISSOURI RIVER NEAR THE 29.5 MILE MARKER, NEAR THE ST. CHARLES COUNTY SHORELINE. VICTIM 1 WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN AN INCIDENT AFTER ATTEMPTED CONTACT BY LAW ENFORCEMENT AND JUMPED OFF OF EASTBOUND INTERSTATE 70, BLANCHETTE BRIDGE.
According to court documents viewed by Law&Crime, a trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tried to pull over a black Honda Accord and a green Dodge Challenger on the Blanchette Bridge on Sept. 8. The driver of the Challenger, while wearing a ski mask, jumped out the driver’s window and got into the front passenger seat of the Accord. The Challenger had no plates, authorities said.
The Accord drove off but eventually stopped, and the two men leaped off the Bridge, authorities said.
“Two black male subjects exited the Accord and jumped over the north concrete barrier wall of the Blanchette Bridge and disappeared from Corporal Belote’s sight,” police wrote.
First responders found Dekyo Patterson inside one of the bridge girders. As seen on drone and bodycam footage, firefighters managed to get him out, though he immediately wound up in handcuffs.
He is charged with resisting/interfering with arrest for a felony, tampering with a motor vehicle, and stealing a motor vehicle. A court hearing is set for Jan. 28.
