USC basketball recruit Alijah Arenas is out of an induced coma after vehicle crash in Los Angeles

Arenas is a son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas and was signed to play for USC in the fall.

A Southern California basketball prospect, Alijah Arenas, has emerged from a medically induced coma following a severe car crash, as confirmed by his family in a statement released on Friday.

The 18-year-old Arenas remains intubated, his family told ESPN, but has “shown significant signs of progress within the last 24 hours.”

The incident took place in the Reseda area of the San Fernando Valley during the early hours of Thursday, prompting a response from the Los Angeles Police Department. According to the LA Fire Department, the vehicle involved in the single-vehicle collision was a Tesla Cybertruck that hit a tree and a fire hydrant, leading to a fire.

The family said Arenas remembered the smoke from the crash and wrote to ask, “Did anyone get hurt?”

No cause of the crash has been released.

The family expressed its gratitude to those who have helped Arenas and said further updates would be shared “as Alijah continues to heal.”

Alijah Arenas, the son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas, is a student at Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles. At the school, he made history as the first male prep player to score over 3,000 points in his career.
