‘No Good Deed’ Star Luke Wilson Reveals JD’s “Wonderfully Stupid” Improv Scene Was Inspired By an Owen Wilson Run-In With David Lee Roth

Netflix‘s No Good Deed is the latest sharply hilarious series from Dead to Me creator Liz Feldman. Like that past Netflix hit, No Good Deed juggles dark comedy, grief, and California cliches. One character, JD Campbell (Luke Wilson) is a failed television actor desperately trying to appease his scheming wife Margo (Linda Cardellini) by following her every whim. Including helping her land the 1920s Spanish-style house their neighbors are putting up for sale. In one scene, JD resorts to improv, revealing he’s painfully untalented at it. However, the scene crescendoes with one line so stupid, it’s hilariously genius: “It’s a small world until they lose your luggage.”

According to Luke Wilson, this line was gifted from his brother Owen Wilson, who in turn got it from none other than David Lee Roth…?

**Spoilers for No Good Deed, now streaming on Netflix**

In No Good Deed Episode 5 “Off the Market,” Margo discovers that neighbors Lydia (Lisa Kudrow) and Paul (Ray Romano) have taken their gorgeous home off the market. Panicked, she forces JD to join her in stalking them. They follow Lydia and Paul to a hiking trail where the couple are picnicking. JD nervously warns Margo that he’s bad at improv and, boy, is he.

While tons of actors have proudly made their brand hinge on their improv skills — including the comedic licks of Luke Wilson’s own famous brother Owen — poor JD is hopeless. He keeps awkwardly repeating, “Indeed, indeed,” and undermining Margo’s plotting. Eventually, Margo excuses herself to leave JD alone with Lydia and Paul. JD notes, “It’s a small world,” prompting Lydia and Paul to agree with the common sentiment. “Until they lose your luggage,” JD ends the statement.

When Decider asked Luke Wilson if JD’s terrible improv was real improv or scripted, he initially gave most of the credit to No Good Deed showrunner Liz Feldman. Wilson praised Feldman’s writing as well as her collaborative spirit.

“Liz was nice about letting me take what she would call one of my runs where where I would get to try ideas,” Wilson said. “I just think there was so much material about playing a failed, not very intelligent actor to where it would always have me thinking about stuff.”

“The ‘Indeed, indeed,’ that was all Liz. So there were a few things that we added, but it was all pretty much on the page.”

“Whose is ‘It’s a small world until you lose your luggage’?” Cardellini asked.

“That’s interesting,” Wilson said, “because that line I got from my brother Owen who got it from [when] he ran into David Lee Roth in an airport.”

“They were talking about a mutual friend and Owen said to David Lee Roth, like, ‘Wow, it’s such a small world.’ David Lee Roth said, ‘Until they lose your luggage!’”

“I didn’t know that story,” Cardellini said. “That’s amazing.”

“Yeah, and when I said it to Liz Feldman, she said, ‘It’s so wonderfully stupid,’” Wilson said. “I always remember that was her reaction to that line. ‘Wonderfully stupid.’”

And wonderfully perfect for a character like JD in No Good Deed.
