Pennsylvania prosecutors stated on Monday that authorities legally detained and gathered evidence from Luigi Mangione, the suspect accused of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, during his arrest in December 2024 in Altoona, where he reportedly fled after the incident in New York.
Mangione, aged 26, faces charges of first-degree murder linked to an act of terrorism, stalking, and various other state and federal charges in New York and Pennsylvania for allegedly shooting Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, on a Manhattan sidewalk on Dec. 4, 2024.
“The Commonwealth avers that police at all times acted within the authority bestowed by law,” the court document filed Monday states.
The report also indicates that Altoona law enforcement officers, who were dispatched in uniform in response to a 911 call from a local McDonald’s manager reporting a possible sighting of the individual resembling the New York CEO shooter, followed proper procedures when approaching Mangione.
