THE QUESTION

Is there a Stanley mug recall due to burn risks?

THE SOURCES

THE ANSWER

This is true.

Yes, there is a Stanley mug recall due to burn risks.

WHAT WE FOUND

The recall covers all Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the U.S. The decision to recall these products was made in response to burn risks associated with the mugs, as reported by both the company and the U.S. Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Approximately 2.6 million mugs are impacted by this recall, according to the CPSC.

The issue with the Stanley mugs lies in the threads of the lids, which have the potential to shrink under specific conditions involving heat and torque – such as when the lid is being screwed or unscrewed. This shrinkage can lead to the lid detaching while the mug is in use, posing a potential hazard to consumers.

Stanley has received 91 reports, including 16 in the U.S., of the recalled mugs’ lids detaching during use, federal regulators say. Thirty-eight of those incidents worldwide caused burn injuries, including two in the U.S., with 11 requiring medical attention.

The recall doesn’t affect other Stanley products, including the popular tumblers with straws.

How to check your Stanley mug

The recalled Stanley mugs were sold in stores and online by Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target and other retailers from June 2016 through December 2024 for between $20 and $50, depending on the model, according to the CPSC.

All of the recalled mugs will have the Stanley logo on the front and bottom. They will also have one of the following product ID numbers on the bottom depending on the type of mug and size you own.

  • 12 ounces: 20-01437
  • 16 ounces: 20-01436, 20-02211
  • 12 ounces: 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825
  • 16 ounces: 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957
  • 20 ounces: 20-02034, 20-02746

If you have one of the recalled Stanley mugs, you should stop using it immediately and reach out to Stanley for a free replacement lid.

You can complete a registration for a free placement lid on Stanley’s website.
