A New Jersey police officer, aged 32, has been arrested and accused of involvement in a home invasion at the residence of her ex-boyfriend. During the incident, she allegedly physically assaulted both her ex-boyfriend and another woman present in the house, and also made threats to set the house on fire.
Following a call placed just before 11:30 p.m. on a Friday, the Berkeley Township Police responded to the scene as informed by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. It was reported that Rebecca Sayegh had forcefully entered the property by breaking the glass front door, proceeding to harm and intimidate the two individuals inside.
She also damaged the hood of a vehicle belonging to one of the victims, which was parked in the driveway.
“Sayegh was taken into custody at the scene — after having resisted efforts to peacefully place her under arrest,” the office said.
Initially, Sayegh was charged through a summons. However, due to the gravity of the accusations, a warrant was later issued for her arrest by the prosecutors office. Consequently, she was taken into custody and placed in the Ocean County Jail awaiting a detention hearing.
Law&Crime reported that Sayegh was a 9-year veteran of the Toms River Township Police Department and was off-duty at the time of the incident. She was charged with one count each of first-degree home invasion burglary, terroristic threats, and resisting arrest.
According to New Jersey Advance Media, Sayegh broke into the home and assaulted the two victims, then made threats to burn down the house as she was taken away by police.
