New modelling from pollster YouGov is predicting a surprise landslide win in Saturday’s federal election for Labor, and projecting the Coalition is on track to fall to its smallest minority in 80 years.

The seat-by-seat modelling, which is based on more than 35,000 interviews with voters conducted throughout April, gives Labor just under a 53-47 two-party preferred lead over the Coalition.

That’s largely in line with other recent surveys, most of which have Labor ahead either 52-48 or 53-47.

Leaders enter final leg of campaign on election trail

While the Coalition’s showing in public polls has declined throughout the campaign, Dutton has previously pointed to internal, seat-by-seat polling suggesting the Liberals and Nationals are well placed to win key marginal electorates and form government on Saturday night.

The opposition leader returned to his home seat of Dickson – the most marginal in all of Queensland – this morning.

Labor and independent challenger Ellie Smith are both mounting strong challenges for the seat, but Dutton said he only returned to the area for a Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal breakfast, which he attends every year, rather than to “sandbag” the seat.

He dodged questions about whether he was worried about losing the electorate he has held since 2001.

While YouGov’s modelling projects a number of Queensland seats will change hands on Saturday, it also predicts that Dutton will retain his own seat.
