One of them is the acclaimed Steppenwolf drama “Purpose,” with six chances to win.
Jon Michael Hill was the youngest performer to ever join the Steppenwolf ensemble.
And Glenn Davis is not only a veteran actor, but co-artistic director.
Cast members Latanya Richardson Jackson and Kara Young are also nominees.
“The commitment to authentic storytelling that has been nurtured by Steppenwolf Theatre over the past five decades is truly remarkable, and extends throughout the entire community,” Hill commented.
“While we are truly honored to receive recognition, awards and Tony nominations are not what drive us. We are driven by our passion for the craft and the narratives we bring to life,” Davis explained. “When we spoke with you, Hosea, a year ago, we made it clear that our focus is not on Broadway. However, should that opportunity arise, we would embrace it wholeheartedly.”
Davis is from Chatham.
“Yeah, Chatham, 87th Street; my grandmother’s very proud today,” he said.
Hill is from Waukegan.
“I have a deep affection for my hometown; whenever possible, I make an effort to give back. Mention Chicago to a fellow Chicagoan, and they will immediately inquire about your neighborhood or street. I have always proudly represented Waukegan, and I am grateful to be a part of the vibrant tapestry of Illinois,” he expressed.
Chicago Native Harry Lennix is also nominated, and was part of the launch last spring.
“You will equate that with excellence; it’s the company we keep that speaks volumes to what this opportunity represents, what this play will mean, not just to Chicago but to the country and to the world,” Lennix said.
The Tony Awards are presented on June 8.
ABC7 Chicago’s Hosea Sanders will have more about the nominees whose shows were launched in Chicago in upcoming stories.
