Trump said he’s already ordered his administration to take action:
President Donald Trump announced plans to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the infamous former prison located on a remote island in California. The facility has been closed for over six decades. Trump shared this decision on his Truth Social platform, expressing concerns about persistent criminal activity in the country.
He highlighted the need to address violent criminals who pose a threat to society, emphasizing the importance of isolating them from causing harm to others. Trump commended past practices of incarcerating dangerous offenders far away from the public.
Trump directed multiple federal agencies, including the Bureau of Prisons, the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to collaborate in the reopening and significant expansion of Alcatraz. The objective is to accommodate the most dangerous and ruthless criminals in the United States.
The historic prison, the subject of numerous movies including “Birdman of Alcatraz,” was shut down in 1963 due to its high operating costs and deteriorating infrastructure. The site was nearly three times more expensive to operate than any other Federal penitentiary, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
