Authorities in Georgia have made a second arrest in the killing of a high school football player just days before he was set to compete in a state championship game with his team. This time, the individual arrested was actually a teammate who had played in honor of Brandon Smith.
A’darious Williams had been previously taken into custody for the murder of Smith, a 17-year-old defensive lineman, on December 7, 2023, in Manchester, Georgia. Smith had been reported missing on the same day, and his remains were discovered behind a residence three days later. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Williams fatally shot Smith after a dispute.
Despite the tragedy, Smith’s team, the Manchester High School Blue Devils, went on to compete in the state championship game following the discovery of his body. The team’s captains paid tribute to their fallen teammate by bringing his jersey onto the field before the match, which ultimately ended in a narrow defeat to the defending champions, Bowdon.
Now, the GBI says it has arrested Qua’vion Jakwon Cooper, 17, and charged him with murder. They say Cooper “aided and abetted” Williams but did not provide details.
Cooper was also on the championship game team, scoring a touchdown and leading the team in tackles and rushing yards, WSB reported.
The Meriwehter County School District, which includes Manchester High School, said in a statement that it was aware of the arrests.
“This is a deeply difficult moment for many in our community, and our hearts remain with Brandon’s family, friends, and teammates as they continue to grieve this loss,” the district said.
“We are fully cooperating with law enforcement officials as they lead the investigation. The safety, well-being, and emotional support of our students—at Manchester High School and across Meriwether County Schools—remains our highest priority. We are committed to providing a safe and caring environment for all.”
