Did Amazon Prime Video Remove ‘Robin Hood’ Opening Quote Condemning “Tyranny and Injustice”? Possible Censorship Explanation

Social media and streaming sleuths have done it again.

A quote showcased in the first scene of 2010’s Robin Hood typically reads as follows: “In times of tyranny and injustice when law oppresses the people, the outlaw takes his place in history.” However, the version currently streaming on Prime Video features a blank canvas, as noted by TikTok user @theshannonduke0 in a post shared on Monday (May 5).

“Anyone else notice this?”reads the caption on the TikTok, which has garnered over 487,000 likes.

DECIDER reached out to Prime Video for more information, but did not hear back in time for publication. (We will of course update this piece if and when we hear back.)

Directed by Ridley Scott, the 2010 iteration of the outlaw story stars Russell Crowe in the title role of Robin Longstride, alongside Cate Blanchett, Oscar Isaac, Matthew Macfadyen, and Mark Strong.

In addition to Prime Video, the film is available to rent or buy on digital platforms.

Though the streaming service has yet to address this publicly, and exactly how long the quote has been absent from the film is not confirmed, its absence has been called out as “censorship” by critics on X.

“They’re quietly rewriting history on streaming platforms,” one wrote.

“Censorship is real, this is why you buy hard copies of things, books, movies… from the Robin Hood with Russel Crowe [sic], censored on Prime,” another posted.

Whether or not the move was technically censorship, someone else claimed that “this is such an obscure movie to go out of your way to censor, too.”

Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer were announced as the stars of The Death of Robin Hood in May 2024, per Variety. According to the outlet, A24 purchased the rights to the film a couple weeks later.
