OCHOPEE, Fla. – Two airboats collided with each other Friday afternoon in southwest Florida, injuring more than a dozen people, officials said.

The reports from news outlets indicated that the airboats, which were carrying a total of 33 individuals, collided in Ochopee, located about 75 miles (120 kilometers) to the west of Miami. Following the incident, sixteen of the individuals involved were taken to hospitals for medical attention.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the crash.

According to information shared in a Facebook post by the Greater Naples Fire Rescue District, the collision occurred at Wooten’s Everglades Airboat Tours at approximately 3 p.m. Wooten’s Everglades Airboat Tours is known for providing airboat tours through private Everglades grasslands, among other activities, as detailed on its website.

Wooten’s Everglades Airboat Tours didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

It was not immediately clear how the crash had occurred or the nature of the passengers’ injuries.
