'Words cannot describe this great loss': Cleveland officials mourn loss of fire cadet after 'medical emergency' during training

The name of the cadet, whom officials say was a longtime friend of Mayor Justin Bibb, has not yet been released.

CLEVELAND — A cadet from the Cleveland Division of Fire Academy has died after suffering a “medical emergency,” city leaders confirmed Friday night.

As per an official statement, an academy cadet was swiftly transported by ambulance from the academy location on Lakeside Avenue East after experiencing a medical emergency during physical training. Sadly, he was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Even though the identity of the cadet has not been disclosed yet, reports confirm that he was a close friend of Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb. Mayor Bibb, who accompanied the cadet to the hospital, expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy.

Mayor Bibb mentioned, “It’s challenging to find the right words to express how deeply saddened I am for his family, friends, fellow cadets, and everyone who recognized his kindness, selflessness, and empathy.” The cadet had aspirations to continue his dedication to serving others by enrolling in the Fire Academy, a dream that was tragically cut short. Mayor Bibb assured that he will exert his utmost efforts as Mayor to uphold the memory of the cadet.

“Our entire Cleveland Fire Family is saddened by this loss,” Cleveland Fire Chief Anthony Luke added. “We offer our condolences to his family and will stand with them through the difficult days ahead.”

The city says more information regarding the incident “will be released in the days to come.”

“Words cannot describe this great loss,” wrote Jake Konys, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 93 union. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and classmates of our Brother. While his time amongst our ranks was cut short, he will forever hold a place within our fire family.”
