After airing six seasons, The Amazing World of Gumball went on hiatus in 2019. However, fans can rejoice as the show is being brought back on Hulu with new episodes continuing from where it left off, effectively serving as its seventh season, according to series creator Ben Bocquelet. The new teaser released by Hulu indicates that the show will maintain its trademark absurdity that fans have come to love.
The teaser clip brings viewers back to Elmore, where Gumball is shown frantically getting ready for school after oversleeping. He is reminded by Darwin about their tardiness, to which Gumball humorously remarks, “Oh, dude, we’re late for school!”
How late are they exactly? As Darwin quips, “About seven years,” a nod to the show’s extended break. Despite their delay, Gumball opts for a little more shut-eye, suggesting, “Five more minutes then,” before returning to his cozy spot in bed.
Considering it’s actually been six years since the show left the air, it sounds like the revival series won’t be airing until late 2025 or 2026. But Hulu has not announced a premiere date.
The show will be taking big swings as it promises “wilder stories, bigger twists, and surreal humor,” warranting a whole new title for the revival: The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball.
“Welcome back to Elmore, where the laws of reality are a joke, and family life is anything but ordinary,” reads Hulu’s summary of the series. “Whether he’s battling an evil fast food empire, facing off against a sentient AI in love with his mom, or trying to stop Banana Joe from wearing pants— Gumball drags Darwin, Anais, and the rest of Elmore along for the ride.”
Bocquelet shared a statement about the new show with executive producers and directors Matt Layzell and Erik Fountain.
“What an amazing opportunity to play with these characters again!” they said. “Fans can look forward to plenty more antics and misadventures in Elmore because Gumball and Darwin haven’t grown up much since we last saw them…we haven’t either.”
The series will stream exclusively on Hulu and Disney+ and Hulu bundle.
