Enright, diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2022, has a 2.00 ERA in nine games with Triple-A Columbus this season
DETROIT — The Cleveland Guardians called up relief pitcher Nic Enright on Saturday, marking another milestone in his battle against Hodgkin lymphoma.
In 2019, the Guardians drafted the right-hander in the 20th round. Unfortunately, he received a cancer diagnosis in December 2022, shortly after being picked by the Miami Marlins in the Rule V draft.
Due to his medical condition, he began the season on the injured list as he underwent treatment for lymph node cancer. Despite his health challenges, he managed to pitch seven times for Triple-A Jacksonville before being returned to the Guardians.
He has been undergoing treatments before and after each season, as well as a cycle of immunotherapy at the All-Star break in 2023.
Throughout 2024, he played for Triple-A Columbus, achieving a record of 2-1 with an impressive 1.06 ERA in 16 appearances. In the following year, he started with the Clippers and maintained a solid 2.00 ERA in nine games. He was later called up to the majors when Hunter Gaddis needed time off due to a bereavement situation.
Enright did not take the mound during the Guardians’ 7-5 win over the Detroit Tigers Saturday night, but will likely remain with the big league club for at least the next three days.
