Morrow County Sheriff identifies deputy shot, killed responding to domestic situation

Sheriff John Hinton identified the deputy as 31-year-old Daniel Sherrer.

In Morrow County, Ohio, the deputy who was shot and killed while responding to a domestic situation on Monday night has been identified by the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff John Hinton identified the deputy as 31-year-old Daniel Sherrer, a four-year veteran with the agency.

The incident took place when the sheriff’s office received a call regarding a domestic situation at the 100 block of County 26 in Marengo. Upon reaching the location, a shooting involving Deputy Sherrer took place.

Sherrer was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries. The suspect was also shot and taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Hinton said Sherrer loved his job.

Sheriff Hinton expressed his sorrow saying, “He always had a smile on his face. Never in a bad mood. He came to work every day. He loved this community. He loved the job. It’s unfortunate we’re here today to talk about this.” Sherrer is survived by his parents.

Hinton did not identify the suspect.

“You will never hear the suspect’s name come from my lips… He doesn’t deserve it,” Hinton said.

It’s unclear what unfolded leading up to shots being fired. Hinton said he has not reviewed body camera footage of the incident.

The incident is under investigation by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

“We mourn with our neighbors/colleagues at the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office as they grieve the loss of one of their own who was shot and killed in the line of duty Monday evening. With assistance from the Ohio BCI, we are investigating this tragic incident,” the DCSO said in a statement on social media.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued a statement Tuesday.

“My heart is torn by the loss of yet another Ohio law enforcement officer, who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his community. We are forever indebted to those who lay down their lives for others. I share in the anguish experienced by so many in this tight-knit community – my prayers are with Deputy Sherrer’s family, the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office and all who wear the badge. My thanks to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for stepping up to lead the investigation at a time of crushing grief.”

If anyone has any information regarding the incident, contact the Delaware County Sheriff’s office at 740-833-2830 or [email protected].

Details on Sherrer’s funeral have not been finalized.
