This isn’t just an apology, this is an M&S apology.

Marks & Spencer has kicked off the Christmas advert season with a statement issuing an apology to shoppers over an ‘outtake’ image included in its new advert which apparently caused fury among some shoppers.

Angry Marks and Sparks fans continued to rage at the department store online after it issued a statement explaining exactly what went wrong.

M&S said in a statement posted on Twitter (“X”) on Wednesday night: “Today we shared an outtake image from our Christmas Clothing And Home Advert, which was recorded in August.

“It showed traditional, festive coloured red, green and silver paper party hats in a fire grate.

“While the intent was to playfully show that some people just don’t enjoy wearing paper Christmas hats over the festive season, we have removed the post following feedback and we apologise for any unintentional hurt caused.”

Furious shoppers responded to the tweet.

@kathrynhall said: “I’ll be buying my husband’s socks and underpants from elsewhere this year. You have gone too far this time.”

@chancehall said: “Your ads seem to focus on destruction of old tradition rather than the embrace of new traditions.”

@percysgrandmum said: “The clip burning Christmas cards is the part I find the most abhorrent it’s a Christmas advert and yet you are removing the part of Christmas that Christians celebrate the giving of gifts and cards shame on you M&S”

@jayemdee63 said: “Not bothered then that you are mocking British traditions … as long as it ticks other boxes? This is not just double standards … it’s Marks and Spencer double standards”

@aquiainexox said, totally normally: “Happy to apologise for some ridiculous interpretation on party hats but no apology to your core customers when you belittle Christmas & our traditions. I spend a lot of money with you especially over Christmas but no more. Go woke & go broke”

But other shoppers defended M&S and said the chain, which was founded in Leeds, shouldn’t have had to apologise for the image at all.

@naffraff said: “Wth are you apologising when it was recorded in August fgs…It some st&pid person thinks you have purposely just made it up since the 7th Oct then that’s down to them…Deary me….First you do a bad Xmas ad and now this.”

@photog_al said: “Oh for heaven’s sake. I don’t often use the word snowflake but this is ridiculous. You’re apologizing because people got “offended” by a photo of Christmas hats in a fire grate? To quote John Connor, “We’re not gonna make it, are we?”
