Original 'Hamilton' cast set to perform at the Tony Awards

Twenty-seven original cast members of the groundbreaking musical will reunite for a special performance at the Tony Awards on June 8.

The original Broadway cast of “Hamilton” is set to reunite for a special performance at the 78th Annual Tony Awards on June 8, as announced by CBS and Tony Award Productions. This news is sure to delight fans of the musical, who have been eagerly anticipating this reunion.

The reunion marks 10 years since the smash success first opened on Broadway.

Twenty-seven original cast members, including notable names like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Leslie Odom Jr., are confirmed to participate in the event. The lineup also includes Phillipa Soo, Ariana DeBose, and Jonathan Groff, among others. The specific details of their performance are yet to be revealed.

In addition to the Tony Awards performance, Leslie Odom Jr., who gained acclaim for his portrayal of Aaron Burr alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Alexander Hamilton, will be making a special return to the Richard Rodgers Theatre. He is set to reprise his Tony Award-winning role from September 9 through November 23, marking a significant moment for both the actor and fans of the show. Odom and Miranda originally left “Hamilton” in July 2016, adding to the significance of their return.

The musical made Tony Awards history with a record 16 nominations and 11 wins, including Best Musical. “Hamilton” has since won a Grammy Award, Olivier Award and Pulitzer Prize for Drama, plus received a special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors. A filmed version of the musical became available on Disney+ in 2020 and won an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special.

The show’s original Broadway cast recording recently became the first in history to earn diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Cynthia Erivo, a Tony, Emmy and Grammy winner and three-time Oscar nominee, will host the Tony Awards this year. The show will air live from Radio City Music Hall from 8 to 11 p.m. ET on CBS and stream on Paramount+ in the United States.

Renée Elise Goldsberry, who originated the role of Angelica Schuyler, will co-host “The Tony Awards: Act One” preshow with Darren Criss before the awards show. It will stream on Pluto TV from 6:40 to 8 p.m. ET.
