Many people across Sheffield are mourning the loss of Gatsby this morning after the Mexican restaurant and cocktail bar announced its shock closure.

The party bar on the corner of Division Street and Rockingham Street announced the closure on social media on Tuesday evening as they confirmed they will close for good on New Years Eve (December 31). The bar has been a popular hotspot for pals, pints, cocktails and tacos for over a decade.

There has been an outpouring of reaction from a portion of the thousands of people who were served at Gatsby over the years – even if some of their fond memories are slightly blurry ones.

The announcement was met with an array of sad emoji reactions as one user wrote: ‘Feels like losing a family member’, and others tagged friends and reminisced about ‘all the great nights’ they’d spent at Gatsby.

The Mexican cocktail bar was especially popular throughout Covid-19 lockdowns, when they famously started selling take-away cocktails through a window while indoor restrictions remained in place.

Gatsby also announced that they were making way for something new on the premises, saying: “It’s time for something new. On NYE Gatsby will close its doors for good. But what comes next is the evolution. Something for Sheffield by Sheffield.

“Enjoy the last days of Gatsby and we’ll see you on the other side.” The post has left speculating that a possible rebrand could be on the cards, but we’ll just have to wait until the new year to see.
