A 38-year-old man from Summerfield lost his life in a tragic accident in Sumter County on Sunday. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man crashed into a vehicle he was attempting to overtake.
The fatal wreck happened around 6 p.m. on U.S. 301 near SE 180th Street.
Reports from the FHP indicate that the man from Summerfield was driving a Volkswagen Jetta heading south on U.S. 301 at a high speed. He tried to pass a Dodge Charger being driven by a 51-year-old man from Ocala.
Unfortunately, the front of the Jetta struck the Charger, causing both vehicles to spin out of control into the median. The Jetta overturned multiple times following the impact, as per the FHP’s account of the incident.
The Jetta driver was ejected from the car and suffered fatal injuries, troopers said.
The Ocala man and his passenger, a 51-year-old Ocala woman, suffered minor injuries, the FHP said.
