2025 State of the City address in Akron: Mayor Malik to give annual speech today at Lock 3 Park

This will be Mayor Malik’s second State of the City address, which comes just one day after the one-year mark of the 2024 mass shooting.

AKRON, Ohio — Akron Mayor Shammas Malik is set to give his 2025 State of the City address at Lock 3 Park this afternoon.

The Akron Roundtable is hosting a speech at 5 p.m. with gates opening at 4 p.m. The event is expected to end around 6:30 p.m.

Free tickets were available for residents, but registration to attend the speech has since closed.

The event will also be livestreamed.

After the speech, the Akron RubberDucks will start the Akron Bicentennial Series at 6:35 p.m. at Canal Park, celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the Goodyear Blimp. Attendees who signed up for Mayor Malik’s speech can purchase discounted tickets for the game.

Mayor Malik will deliver his second State of the City address, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the 2024 mass shooting, which occurred near Kelly and 8th avenues. The incident resulted in one fatality and nearly 30 individuals injured during the overnight hours of June 2, with no arrests announced by Akron police to date.

Mayor Malik shared the following statement to mark one year since the shooting on Monday:

A year ago today, we experienced a mass shooting in our community, which sadly took the life of one individual and injured 28 more. I will always remember the aftermath – walking through the yard the next morning and imagining the chaos of the night before. That event truly showcased the skill of our Akron police officers and our Akron firefighter/medics who boldly ran into the chaos and confusion of that scene to treat the wounded and make sense of the tragedy they were witnessing. In the midst of this tragedy, we worked with the Akron Community Foundation and Victim Assistance Program to create a Gun Violence Response Fund to help the victims of that shooting and others to get connected to resources and support. As the investigation continues, seeking to hold those accountable for this tragedy, we take time to remember the victims and redouble our commitment to seeking justice in this case.
