A federal judge in the United States issued a new order regarding a significant immigration and national security case following a hearing where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was initially directed to release Mahmoud Khalil, an anti-Israel activist. The judge’s decision came after arguments presented by Trump administration lawyers on Friday, subsequent to a hearing held on Wednesday.
Earlier in May, amidst concerns for national security, President Trump had imposed a freeze on foreign student visas. This action was taken in response to the support shown by Democrats to Mahmoud Khalil, a student activist at Columbia University and a green card holder. There were indications right from the beginning that the Trump administration had tactics prepared for this case, even as far back as March.
It was speculated that the administration had strategically navigated around the ruling of a judge appointed by Barack Obama by relocating Khalil from New York to Louisiana. This move potentially reopened the possibility of Khalil’s deportation, suggesting that there were more developments expected in this complex legal battle.
