The special program, titled “Our Chicago: In God We Trust…?”, delves into the role of the Black church in the Civil Rights Movement. It looks at how the church served as both a spiritual sanctuary and a center for organizing efforts. The program features archival footage of prominent religious leaders from the Civil Rights era, such as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It also includes interviews with local pastors like Rev. Dr. Charlie Dates of Progressive Baptist Church, Rev. Reginald Sharpe of Fellowship Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss of Trinity United Church of Christ, and Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church. ABC 7 Chicago explores how these church leaders mobilized communities and inspired action in Chicago and across the country.
In addition to the historical perspective, “Our Chicago: In God We Trust…?” also examines the role of money in the civil rights movement. The program looks at how financial aspects, from the Black Panthers to influential preachers like Chicago’s Rev. Jesse Jackson, affected the movement. By delving into capitalism and the church’s efforts to address economic disparities among African Americans, the program sheds light on a crucial aspect of the Civil Rights Movement.
