LOS ANGELES — The lovable duo of Timon and Pumbaa from “The Lion King” are making a comeback! Known for stealing the show in the original 1994 animated film and the 2019 live-action remake, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen reprise their roles to bring joy and laughter to audiences once again.
Eichner and Rogen, portraying Timon and Pumbaa, are masters of comedic timing and wit. Interestingly, a large portion of their humor in “The Lion King” was actually improvised rather than scripted. Eichner shared in an interview with George Pennacchio that director Barry Jenkins encouraged extensive ad-libbing, with approximately 90% of their dialogues being spontaneous.
While Rogen is known for his roles in more mature comedies, he is delighted to be part of a film suitable for all ages. However, his friends and family have a playful grievance about his part in “The Lion King.” Rogen amusingly revealed, “I don’t have kids, but many of my friends do, all with children mostly under ten. They didn’t grow up watching the original film in theaters, so they tease me about my rendition of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ from the movie’s soundtrack.”
You can see Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner as Timon and Pumbaa in “Mufasa: The Lion King” in theaters on December 20th.
