LUIGI Mangione has been charged with multiple offences in connection with the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

He comes from a prominent and wealthy Italian-American family — here’s what we know about the Mangione dynasty.

Louis Mangione

Louis Mangione, 71, is Luigi Mangione’s father and a successful businessman.

He is the owner of Lorien Health Services, a nursing home company founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1977, by his father Nicholas Mangione Sr.

Louis continued the family’s business legacy, managing and expanding the healthcare services company.

Part of a large family, he is one of ten children raised by Nicholas and Mary Mangione.

Kathleen Zannino Mangione

Kathleen Zannino Mangione, 60, is Luigi Mangione’s mother.

She hails from another prominent Italian-American family in Baltimore and runs a boutique travel company.

Joseph Zannino Jr, founded a funeral home in Baltimore’s Italian enclave, East Baltimore’s Highlandtown neighborhood.

An investigator looking into the death of Brian Thompson got in touch with Kathleen when she had reported her son missing in San Francisco on November 18, 2024.

Regarding their conversation, the officer noted that “… she did not confirm that it was her son in the picture but mentioned it was something he might be capable of doing.”

Nicholas Mangione Sr

Nicholas Bernard Mangione (1925-2008) was Luigi’s paternal grandfather and a self-made real estate developer who left a significant mark on the Baltimore area.

He founded Lorien Health Services and owned the radio station WCBM.

Nicholas Sr was known for his shrewd business sense and competitive nature.

In the 1970s, he purchased the Turf Valley Country Club and developed it into a golf course community.

He later acquired Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Maryland, in the 1980s.

Nicholas Sr built a diverse business empire that included country clubs, hotels, resorts, nursing homes and a radio station.

His influence extended beyond business into local politics and charitable endeavors.

He was a World War II veteran and served briefly on the Baltimore City Board of Education in 1970.

The late Thomas J. D’Alesandro III — former Baltimore mayor and brother of Nancy Pelosi — told the Baltimore Sun in 1995: “Nick Mangione is foremost identified as a family man.

We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved

Mangione family statement

“He is maybe a little rough around the edges and maybe with an aggressive personality, but a man with a big heart.”

When he died, Nicholas Sr left behind 10 children and more than 35 grandchildren.

Nino Mangione

Luigi Mangione’s cousin, Nino Mangione, 37, is a Republican politician serving in the Maryland House of Delegates.

He represented District 42B from 2019 to 2023, when he moved on to District 42A, which he still represents.

Nino’s political career began with grassroots efforts, including testifying at bill hearings and volunteering for Republican campaigns.

Elected to the House of Delegates in 2018, Nino was appointed to the Appropriations Committee and serves on the Health and Social Services Subcommittee and the Oversight Committee on Pensions.

He has been a vocal advocate for law enforcement, parental rights in education and protecting taxpayers.

Before entering politics, Nino worked at the family-owned WCBM radio for over a decade, eventually becoming the News and Editorial Director.

Legacy

The Mangione family’s influence in Baltimore is substantial.

They are known for their business acumen, political connections and charitable work.

The family own several country clubs, health care facilities and real estate companies in the Baltimore area.

Their philanthropic efforts are channeled through the Mangione Family Foundation, which supports various causes, including Catholic charities, educational institutions and the arts.

Luigi’s cousin, Nino Mangione, serves as an elected official in the Maryland House of Delegates, further cementing the family’s political influence.

The family’s affluence and charitable endeavors have made them well-respected in Baltimore, with one local personality describing them as “incredibly generous”.

Despite this background of wealth and success, Luigi Mangione’s alleged actions have shocked both his family and the community.

The family released a statement expressing their devastation following the tragic turn of events.

It read: “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest.

“We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”
