'We Were Liars' Season 2 Burning Questions Answered After Book Changes

The We Were Liars season 1 finale left fans with some lingering questions — and a few of the show’s stars have answers.

Spoilers for We Were Liars season 1 below.

Cadence (portrayed by Emily Alyn Lind) made a decision after recollecting the tragic fire that claimed the lives of her fellow Liars – Johnny (played by Joseph Zada), Gat (portrayed by Shubham Maheshwari), and Mirren (interpreted by Esther McGregor) – and parted ways with the Sinclair family. Although her narrative ended on a somewhat positive note, other relatives did not experience the same resolution.

“I believe there are more twists to come,” Maheshwari shared exclusively with Us Weekly in early June. “I was unaware of how they would conclude the story until I read the script… I am excited for a second season. The unexpected cliffhanger leaves the audience curious. I was completely taken aback by it.”

Following Cadence’s farewell to the apparitions of The Liars, she embarked on her journey to the mainland aboard her grandfather Harris’ (portrayed by David Morse) boat to start anew. The series concluded with a scene revealing Carrie (played by Mamie Gummer) secretly taking Percocet pills, indicating a relapse. Although Johnny is presumed to have moved on, he is still present in spirit and communicating with Carrie.

Emily Alyn Lind didn’t really keep that We Were Liars twist in the back of her mind while filming the Prime Video show. Spoilers for We Were Liars season 1 below. “The Liars in Summer 17, once they’re ghosts — that feels weird saying that [out] loud,” Lind, 23, told Us Weekly exclusively ahead of […]

Since the show is based on the book series of the same name, written by E. Lockhart, fans can presumably get answers to all their questions.

“At this point, if you haven’t read the book, watch the show [and then] read the book,” Lind told Us. “What’s so fun about that then, is you have so many extra elements from the book. It’s longer form, so there’s everything we couldn’t fit into the show.”

What Did the Moms Do?

At one point in the finale, Carrie and Bess (Candice King) are discussing an incident from their past but don’t offer any details. This question is presumably answered in Lockhart’s prequel novel, Family of Liars.

Why Can’t Johnny Leave Beechwood Island?

It was assumed that Johnny crossed over to the other side with his fellow Liars at the end of season 1. However, he appears to have been communicating with his mom, Carrie, all summer long. Because of her addiction, it seems he can’t leave.

When Did Carrie Relapse — And Will She Marry Ed?

It’s hinted in the flashback story line during Summer 16 that Carrie might have relapsed but never confirmed. The finale also ends with her and Ed back together, so it’s unclear what their future holds.

Could Gat and Mirren Come Back?

“That would be really cool,” Maheshwari told Us. “If that happens, I’m so game. I’m so ready for that, but I really don’t know. It’s hard to say, I’m sure they have ideas. I’m not very aware of what they’re thinking.”

What Happened to Cadence?

“I don’t think Cadence is done whatsoever. I think that there’s a beauty to how she gets on that boat and leaves, but this is just her leaving,” Lind explained to Us. “But what does that mean? There’s an entire legacy. She has to figure out how to get along with her grandfather, so her secrets don’t leak or burn the place to the ground again. There [are] so many things that are unsaid when she goes away. It doesn’t mean she’s gone, I don’t believe.”

We Were Liars got viewers invested in the Sinclairs matriarchs — but who should play the younger versions of the beloved moms in the Family of Liars prequel series? Based on E. Lockhart‘s YA book series, We Were Liars centers on the affluent Sinclair family, known for the idyllic summers they spend on their secluded […]

Will There Be a ‘We Were Liars’ Season 2?

A second season isn’t confirmed just yet, but the cast and crew are hopeful to return. There is, of course, a whole other book to be adapted.

All episodes of We Were Liars season 1 are streaming now via Prime Video.
