COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State leaders held a dedication ceremony for legendary football coach Woody Hayes on Monday.
Ohio State Athletics Director Ross Bjork, ex-Ohio State player Archie Griffin, former assistant coach John Johnson, and 10TV sports anchor Dom Tiberi were present at the event held at the Ohio State Army ROTC building.
At the ceremony, a portrait and a quote from Hayes were unveiled. The quote said, “The ultimate human desire is what triumphs, whether it’s at Normandy Beach or in Ohio Stadium.”
Hayes completed his studies at Denison University in 1935, majoring in history and English, and later earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Ohio State in 1948.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July 1941 and eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant commander during World War II. He commanded PC 1251 in the Palau Islands Invasion and the destroyer-escort USS Rinehart in both the Atlantic and Pacific operations.
Hayes then went on to coach at Denison, Miami University and Ohio State, compiling a career college football record of 238 wins, 72 losses and 10 ties. He coached the Buckeyes for 28 seasons.
While at Ohio State, Hayes was a guest lecturer to teach classes on military history.
“As we reflect on the legacy of Coach Hayes, let this portrait be a reminder to every cadet, every athlete, and every Buckeye that greatness is forged in discipline, humility, and service. Thank you all for being here,” Dom said during closing remarks.
