DELTONA, Fla. – For Michael Kohl, of Deltona, holiday decorating is a labor of love.
“Every year it gets bigger, better and more ridiculous,” a laughing Kohl said. “There’s always room for more lights.”
As part of News 6’s spotlight on holiday homes, we asked Kohl to share more of the story behind his sparkling display — a passion that began about 15 years ago.
“Years ago, when I started this, somebody who owned the house I used to live in came up and said, ‘Isn’t this a little ridiculous?’” Kohl said. “I looked at the man and said, ‘Nah, man, I’m afraid of the dark. That’s why it looks like this at nighttime.’ It kind of sticks true. Even today, I say that jokingly.”
Kohl’s house is covered in lights, inflatables, snowflakes and more, but his favorite part of the display is front and center—25 arches covered in lights, creating what feels like a winter wonderland walkway right down his Deltona sidewalk.
It was an idea inspired by a tunnel he saw at the Daytona International Speedway.
“These are just electrical conduits, bent together on steel bars, beaten into the ground. I can go over and pick this up. They’re not even glued together,” Kohl explained.
Beyond the sidewalk, there’s another eye-catching part of Kohl’s display—a 12-foot skeleton originally purchased for Halloween, now transformed for the season to accompany his 12-foot Christmas tree.
“We got him dressed up for Christmas,“ Kohl laughed. ”Sometimes I swear his eyes look mad at me for putting him in a dress.“
Kohl loves watching people stop to admire the lights and he plans to add more in the years to come.
“I love doing it, and I’ll probably do it to my last breath,” Kohl shared.
