Florida Grandfather Shot Dead in Dispute Over Loud Music on Thanksgiving Day

A Texas man has been charged with the murder of his uncle in a shooting earlier this month.

19-year-old Derrick Sanders Jr. is facing charges related to a shooting on December 1st. The incident resulted in the death of 40-year-old Christopher Sanders Sr. The shooting occurred while they were in a car chasing another vehicle and exchanging gunfire.

Fort Worth Police said that the two men were in a Dodge Charger with four other people that afternoon as it followed a Chrysler 300 out of an apartment complex, KTVT reported. Christopher Sanders was in the front passenger seat, and his nephew was in the back seat behind the driver.

Investigators found surveillance video showing both men firing at the Chrysler, with Derrick Sanders hanging out of the rear driver’s side window, firing over the top of the Dodge.

Some of those shots, police said, were fired at a downward angle and pierced the roof of the Dodge, striking Christopher Sanders in the head.

When police were called to the scene, they found Christopher Sanders dead in the Dodge. He was wearing a pair of orange gloves, similar to other gloves found near the car, KDFW reported. Investigators searched the apartment complex and found a fired casing near the trunk along with bloody footprints leading toward an air conditioning unit, where they found clothes and a handgun.

The shooting was obviously planned, police said, citing the gloves and paper covering the Dodge’s license plates.

Derrick Sanders spoke with detectives on December 5 and told them he was in the car when the shooting took place but apparently did not say he was the killer.

Police have not said if they have identified others in the car at the time or whether anyone else will be charged.

The 19-year-old has been charged with felony murder and firing a weapon into a occupied vehicle.
