Police believe an ‘unknown suspect’ fired gunshots inside an apartment and a bullet penetrated the floor, hitting the child in the apartment below.
A 7-year-old boy is in serious but stable condition at an Akron hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound early Saturday morning, police said.
Officers responded to the shooting at around 2:45 a.m. in the 400 block of Wildwood Avenue and found the child suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Police are not releasing the victim’s name “pending further investigation,” the Akron Police Department said in a press release.
“While the exact circumstances are unknown, preliminary information suggests that an unknown subject fired gunshots inside an upstairs apartment, and at least one of the bullets penetrated the floor and struck the victim, who was inside the residence below,” the police department said.
Officers searched the upstairs apartment and did not find anyone inside, but did find “what appeared to be a bullet hole in the floor and other evidence,” according to police.
Akron police detectives are asking anyone who has information that could identify and locate “anyone with knowledge of or responsible” for the shooting to call 330-375-2490.
