SNAP recipients urged to protect their benefits from theft

Criminals are able to use “skimmers” to fraudulently obtain EBT card numbers in the same way they steal credit card numbers.

The Ohio Department of Family Services (ODJFS) in the USA is cautioning individuals benefiting from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to remain vigilant for any questionable behavior.

ODJFS, which is in charge of administering SNAP benefits in Ohio, says they are seeing an increase in attempts to fraudulently obtain EBT card numbers from SNAP recipients.

According to ODJFS, criminals are utilizing a number of methods to gain access to participants benefits.

One of them, “skimming”, occurs when a criminal places a device over a point-of-sale card reader at a store or business in order to steal card numbers.

Another say criminals try to steal benefits is through phishing scams where fake text messages are sent to victims in an attempt to obtain EBT card numbers and PINs.

ODJFS says there are a number of ways you can protect yourself from having your benefits stolen:

  • Download ConnectEBT app on your phone or tablet and enable card lock features
  • Create and frequently change PIN for your card
  • Never share PIN or card numberExamine card readers before use for signs of card skimmers
  • Cover card reader keypad with hand so others can’t see the PIN you enter

If you think you have been the victim of electronic benefit theft, you can seek reimbursement from your local County Department of Job and Family Services. Click here to locate your local department.

Over $12 million has been reimbursed to Ohioans since October 2022.

SNAP benefit eligibility is based on income and asset limits. Although it is a federal program, eligibility is determined by the state. To check your eligibility or apply, click here.
